About this project

The first line of the Cairo Metro is the first operating Cairo Metro line and the first of its kind in Egypt, the Arab world and Africa. Its construction was fully completed on April 12, 1989. The line connects Helwan (south Cairo) and New Marg (north Cairo) stations, passing through thirty-three stations on its way. The route is designed with a capacity of 60,000 passengers/hour in each direction, and the maximum speed of its trains is 80 km/hour, and it can cover the distance between its start and end within 65 minutes with a train time of two and a half minutes. Its length is 44 km, including 4.7 km of tunnels. It is currently operated under the supervision of the Egyptian Metro Management and Operation Company.

Construction stages :

The line was built in two stages, and another stage was added later:

The first phase: It extended from Haloun station to Ramses station, and was 29 kilometers long. It was opened in 1987.

The second phase: It extended from Ramses to Al-Marj, and was 14 kilometers long. It was opened in 1989.

The third phase: an extension of 1.3 km was added to the northern part. It was opened in 1999.

the cost :

The cost of the stage was covered through a loan provided by the French government to its Egyptian counterpart amounting to 1,107 million French francs, which was converted into the Egyptian pound in several stages. The cost of the first stage from Helwan to Ramses reached 473.9 million Egyptian pounds, while the cost of the second stage from Ramses to Al-Marg. 499.6 million Egyptian pounds..
